Chinese Herbs

Herbal medicine has been used worldwide for thousands of years. It has been used by all cultures in the East and the West, and was the dominant form of medicine on the planet until the last century. Most of today’s prescription medications are made by taking the effective component of a plant and isolating it. This is both good and bad. The good part is that prescription medications can treat some diseases faster than traditional herbal methods. The negative of this is that these synthetic medications are so concentrated and powerful that the side effects are sometimes worse than the benefits. This results in thousands of deaths occurring annually due to the use of these prescription medications.

Because herbs are typically prescribed in combination, particularly Chinese herbs, the different ingredients of a formula balance each other, and they undergo a mutual synergy which increases their efficacy and enhances safety. This approach seeks primarily to correct internal imbalances rather than to treat symptoms alone, and is designed to stimulate the body’s own self-healing process. 

Herbal treatments are a very cost effective treatment option for most people, especially those who want to avoid or get off of prescription drugs. These herbal medicinals may be administered in the form of decoctions, pills, powders, or tinctures. They may also be used as external applications in the form of compresses, lotions, liniments, and plasters..

I primarily prescribe multi-ingredient herbal patent formulas corresponding to both the patient's personal Chinese medical pattern and their Chinese disease diagnosis. These formulas are manufactured in the U.S. at FDA registered facilities, using the highest quality ingredients available. All products are then tested in independent labs to insure purity, safety, and bioavailability. Some herbal formulas that we use are manufactured in China under strict quality controls. These products are then tested in fully certified U.S. laboratories for heavy metals, microbial contamination, and pesticide contamination before they ever make it to my office.  Organic ingredients are used as often as possible, and we do not purchase or prescribe herbs that contain common allergens or endangered species.
